AUSTIN, TX — Texas drivers are paying less at the pump as summer approaches, with the statewide average for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel sitting at $2.75, according to the latest AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch.
Among Texas metro areas, El Paso reports the highest average price, $2.93 per gallon, while Corpus Christi drivers see the lowest prices, $2.56. Lubbock drivers still hover in the low category, with an average price of $2.59 per gallon.
Nationally, the average price for regular unleaded fuel is $3.17, a two-cent decline from last week and 40 cents cheaper than summer 2024.
The drop in prices is being attributed to steady crude oil prices, which have remained in the low $60s per barrel. However, market analysts caution that the Atlantic hurricane season, which begins in June, could alter the current trend, says AAA.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) forecasts a 60% chance of an above-normal hurricane season, which could threaten refineries and fuel supply lines along the Gulf Coast.
"Drivers can expect gas prices to remain lower this summer compared to last year—barring a major storm system that impacts oil and gas operations along the Gulf Coast," said Daniel Armbruster, AAA Texas spokesperson.
“Crude oil prices have held steady, helping keep pump prices down even as demand rises. Crude oil is the main ingredient in gasoline and makes up approximately 50 percent of the cost of each gallon of fuel.”
