Texas DPS Reports Surge in School Safety Concerns

AUSTIN, TX—The Texas Department of Public Safety has announced a record number of school safety-related reports through its iWatchTexas program for September 2024, more than double the figures from September 2023.

According to a press release, the program received a total of 204 reports, primarily concerning alarming behaviors, including threats and potential plans for attacks on school campuses.

DPS Director Steven McCraw stated, "Looking out for one another – especially in the face of serious threats – is embedded in the spirit of Texas. Last month’s record of reports is a testament to the vigilance we have, and need to have, as Texans speak up to help ensure that their families, friends, and neighborhoods stay safe.”

In comparison, the iWatchTexas program received 89 reports related to school safety in September 2023 and just 63 in September 2022.

The iWatchTexas initiative serves as a community-based reporting system that enables Texans to alert authorities about suspicious activities that may indicate potential threats. Reports submitted by citizens are reviewed by analysts who collaborate with local, state, and federal authorities to assess potential dangers.

DPS encourages citizens to report a variety of concerning behaviors, including:

  • Comments suggesting harm to individuals.
  • Inquiries about building security by unfamiliar individuals.
  • Social media posts indicating potential school attacks.
  • Requests for sensitive information without proper justification.
  • Purchases of materials that could be used to create weapons.
  • Photography or videography of security features.

Reports can be made via the iWatchTexas app or by calling 1-844-643-2251. Submitting a report typically takes under five minutes.

The iWatchTexas app is available for free on the Apple App Store and Google Play.

It is important to note that iWatchTexas is not intended for emergencies; individuals should call 911 for urgent situations.
