Texas DPS Graduates New K-9 Teams to Enhance Public Safety

AUSTIN, TX — The Texas Department of Public Safety has announced the graduation of eight new K-9 teams and three certified K-9 Tech Trainers. The new teams will provide specialized support in narcotics detection and tracking.

DPS Director Steven McCraw praised the teams for their commitment and expertise. “These graduates exemplify the highest standards of service, and their impact will be felt across the state,” he said.

The DPS K-9 program, one of the largest in the nation, includes 88 personnel and 76 K-9s trained in various specialties: 52 for narcotics detection, 10 for explosives, and 14 for tracking. The newly graduated teams include five narcotics detection teams and three tracking teams.

Narcotics Detection Teams

The five narcotics detection teams are trained to identify a range of controlled substances, including methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine, and marijuana. These dogs will assist in searches, criminal investigations, and efforts to disrupt drug trafficking in Texas.

Tracking Teams

The three tracking teams are trained to follow human scent trails over long distances and rugged terrain. Their skills will be critical in locating missing persons and fugitives, including high-stakes search-and-rescue missions.

Each K-9 handler also receives training in canine health and medical care to ensure the well-being of their partners in challenging environments. With the graduation of these new teams, DPS strengthens its commitment to public safety and law enforcement across Texas.
