SHALLOWATER, TX – Shallowater Independent School District announced Tuesday morning that Shallowater High School will be closed for the day after a gas leak was detected on campus.
The leak was discovered late Monday night, January 27, after district personnel reported smelling gas near the high school. SISD immediately contacted Atmos Energy, which responded quickly to conduct an investigation. The energy provider confirmed that there was a gas leak at the school.
According to a press release from Shallowater ISD, the gas supply to the high school was shut off while the source of the leak was investigated. No injuries have been reported, and school administration opted to close the campus on Tuesday, January 28, to allow crews to check out the situation.
“Ensuring the safety and well-being of our students and staff is our foremost priority,” said Dr. Anita Herbert, superintendent of SISD. “We are working closely with Atmos Energy and other local authorities to resolve the issue and will continue to provide updates as the situation develops.”
While the high school will remain closed, all other SISD campuses will operate as usual and will remain open for students.
Officials from Atmos Energy are currently at the high school working to repair the leak and ensure the area is safe.
Further details about the cause of the leak and the timeline for reopening the high school have not been announced.
