AUSTIN, TX — Texans will no longer be allowed to change the sex on their driver’s license to match their current gender identity.
Sheri Gipson, the chief of the state’s driver license division, confirmed the policy change Wednesday to KUT, an Austin radio station.
Under the new rules, which are effective immediately, people will only be able to make a change to fix a clerical error.
Previously, a change could be made if someone presented an amended birth certificate or a certified court order.
The rule change was prompted by the office of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s concerns about the validity of some of the court orders, according to a DPS statement.
