Texas DPS Increasing Enforcement for Labor Day Weekend

AUSTIN, TX – To enhance road safety during the Labor Day weekend, the Texas Department of Public Safety is intensifying its enforcement efforts through Operation Crash Awareness Reduction Effort (CARE), which will run from August 30 to September 2 across the state, according to a press release.

Operation CARE is a specialized campaign where Texas Highway Patrol Troopers will focus on identifying and addressing dangerous driving behaviors such as speeding, driving under the influence, and violations of the state’s Move Over, Slow Down law, among other infractions, the release stated.

DPS Director Steven McCraw emphasized the importance of safety during the holiday weekend: “Too often, these long holiday weekends mean problems on the roads. Instead, as we mark the end of summer, let’s keep safety our top priority by following traffic laws and ensuring everyone has a sober ride home. By planning and thinking ahead, we can ensure everyone enjoys the long holiday weekend safely."

During last year’s Labor Day enforcement campaign, Troopers issued over 43,179 citations and warnings. These included 4,332 for speeding, 990 for lacking insurance, 421 for unrestrained passengers or child seats, and more than 207 for Move Over, Slow Down violations. Additionally, 193 individuals were arrested for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) and 222 for other felony offenses.

For a safe driving experience this Labor Day weekend, DPS recommends the following tips:

  • Avoid Drinking and Driving: Arrange for alternative transportation if consuming alcohol.
  • Move Over or Slow Down: When passing emergency vehicles, police, fire, EMS, Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) vehicles, or tow trucks with activated emergency lights, and for any vehicle stopped on the roadside. There have been over 4,510 Move Over, Slow Down violations in 2024.
  • Buckle Up: Ensure all vehicle occupants are wearing seat belts.
  • Drive Cautiously: Reduce speed in adverse weather, heavy traffic, unfamiliar areas, or construction zones.
  • Minimize Distractions: Avoid using mobile devices while driving. Texas law prohibits reading, writing, or sending electronic messages unless the vehicle is stopped.
  • Drive Defensively: Be aware of increased challenges during holiday travel.
  • Use the Left Lane Wisely: Reserve the left lane for passing only, as required by Texas law.
  • Avoid Cutting Off Large Trucks: These vehicles require more space and time to maneuver.
  • Steer It, Clear It: Move your vehicle if involved in a non-injury crash to prevent congestion and secondary accidents. Failing to do so when safe is illegal on some highways.
  • Store the Texas Roadside Assistance Number: Dial 1-800-525-5555 for help. This number is also available on the back of your Texas Driver License.
  • Maintain Your Vehicle: Ensure it is in good condition and that cargo is secure.
  • Report Hazards: Notify law enforcement of road hazards or suspicious activities.
  • Check Conditions: Monitor weather and road conditions before and during travel. For updates, visit Drive Texas.

Additionally, DPS encourages Texans to use the iWatchTexas program to report suspicious activity that could prevent dangerous incidents. This program is particularly important during community events such as parades and festivals. Reports can be submitted via the iWatch Texas website, the free iWatch mobile app, or by calling 844-643-2251. All reports are confidential. For a guide on using iWatchTexas, view the how-to video on their website.

For emergencies, call 911 immediately.
