AUSTIN, TX — The Texas Department of Public Safety has arrested five people and secured 19 warrants in a recent operation targeting fraudulent vehicle inspections known as “clean scanning.”
According to a press release, the operation took place in the Houston area earlier this month, and is part of ongoing efforts to combat illegal activity at vehicle inspection stations.
“Clean scanning” involves passing vehicles through inspections without them undergoing proper checks, often for a fee. Over the past several months, DPS has conducted multiple operations across the state, targeting stations suspected of engaging in this illegal practice.
The most recent operation concluded on November 7, and resulted in five arrests for organized criminal activity related to clean scanning. 14 individuals are still wanted in connection to the operation.
Since February 2023, DPS has secured or served 88 arrest warrants statewide as part of its crackdown on clean scanning. The department has been working closely with local, state, and federal partners to identify and arrest those involved.
DPS officials are urging the public to report any suspected cases of clean scanning. Tips can be reported by calling (512) 424-0290.
