AAA Texas Offers Tips for Safe Holiday Shopping

LUBBOCK, TX — With the holiday shopping season in full swing, AAA Texas is reminding drivers to stay alert and take precautions in parking lots to avoid accidents and theft.

“Stay focused and be aware of the hazards in crowded parking lots this holiday season,” said Doug Shupe, Corporate Communications Manager for AAA Texas. “Distractions or rushing can lead to accidents during what should be a joyful time of year.”

Parking lot crashes are often caused by distractions like talking to passengers, using a cell phone, or looking for a parking spot. While many think of parking lot accidents as minor, they can be costly. Modern vehicles have advanced bumpers with sensors and cameras that can be damaged in low-speed collisions, sometimes requiring expensive repairs and recalibration.

AAA Texas offers the following tips to prevent parking lot accidents:

  • Watch for pedestrians, children, and moving vehicles
  • Drive slowly and follow all traffic signs
  • Avoid cutting across parking lanes or rows
  • Turn on headlights, even in daylight, especially in parking garages
  • Always exchange insurance information if involved in a crash

To avoid theft, AAA Texas also advises:

  • Lock car doors and close windows
  • Never leave the vehicle running unattended
  • Don’t leave valuables in plain sight
  • Park in well-lit, busy areas
  • Avoid hiding spare keys in the vehicle

“Thieves often watch for shoppers who leave items in their cars or try to hide gifts,” Shupe said. “Be discreet when storing valuables, and always be aware of your surroundings.”
