AUSTIN, TX — Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has filed a lawsuit against 3M and DuPont, the largest manufacturers of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) chemical products, for misrepresenting the safety of brand names such as Teflon, Stainmaster, and Scotchgard in their advertising.
PFAS are called "forever chemicals" because they don’t break down in the environment and can build up in humans, animals, and water sources over time.
PFAS chemicals are linked to serious health problems, including cancer and thyroid disease. According to the lawsuit, despite knowing about the dangers for over 50 years, 3M and DuPont continued to advertise their products as "safe for everyday use."
The filing claims the companies marketed these products for over 70 years without telling the public about the risks.
“These companies knew for decades that PFAS chemicals could harm people’s health but kept promoting them as safe to use in homes, around children, and families,” said Attorney General Paxton.
“Texas is taking action to hold these companies responsible for deceiving people and putting Texans at risk.”
This lawsuit is part of Paxton’s efforts to hold companies accountable for the harmful effects of PFAS. Texas had already sued over another PFAS-containing product called Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF) because it was damaging Texas' land and water.
