Texas Gas Prices Rise Ahead of Holiday Travel Rush

LUBBOCK, TX — Gas prices are climbing in Texas, with the average cost of regular unleaded fuel now at $2.67 per gallon, according to AAA Texas’ Weekend Gas Watch. This is 9 cents higher than last week and 7 cents higher compared to the same time last year.

El Paso has the highest average price, at $2.87 per gallon, while Lubbock claims the lowest, at $2.46. For comparison, the national average for regular unleaded gasoline is $3.04, up 1 cent from last week but 4 cents lower than this time last year.

The increase in gas prices is primarily due to higher demand and lower supplies, a trend that is expected to continue as more people prepare and travel for the holidays. AAA Texas predicts that around 9.1 million Texans will travel 50 miles or more during the year-end holiday period, with most of them driving. This surge in travel will likely push fuel demand even higher, possibly leading to even higher prices as 2024 ends.

“As we predicted, gas prices are going up as we get closer to the end of the year,” said Daniel Armbruster, a spokesperson for AAA Texas. “With so many people planning to travel, the extra demand for gas is likely to cause prices to rise even more in the next few days.”

With the holidays approaching, drivers should be prepared for slightly higher gas prices and plan ahead for their trips.
