PLAINVIEW, TX — A Wayland Baptist University graduate was named Texas Game Warden of the Year for her dedication to conservation law enforcement and public service.
Sarah Wennersten is a Texas Game Warden in the Panhandle who covers several counties. According to a press release from Wayland Baptist, her duties include enforcing conservation laws, ensuring hunting compliance, and participating in search-and-rescue missions.
Wennersten graduated from Wayland in 2015 with a degree in fitness management and got her master’s degree in sports administration in 2017.
While in college, she launched her own fitness business and initially planned a career in fitness for tactical professionals. However, after attending the police academy, she discovered her passion for law enforcement and conservation, eventually becoming a Texas Game Warden.
The game warden application process is tough, but Wennersten was accepted into the 63rd Texas Game Warden Academy on her first attempt, said the release. After serving along the Texas-Mexico border, she transferred to the Panhandle region.
Wennersten has also been recognized for her quick actions in emergencies. After the Smokehouse Creek Fire, she helped assess the damage and found a litter of kittens, one of which had been burned.
Wennersten credits her time at Wayland for helping her develop the discipline and determination to follow her path. "Wayland taught me how to stick with it, even when things didn’t go as planned,” she said.
