LUBBOCK, TX — Gas prices in Texas are holding steady at an average of $2.74 per gallon for regular unleaded, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch. This is the same price as last week and 10 cents cheaper than the same time last year.
Drivers in El Paso are paying the highest prices, averaging $2.96 per gallon. Meanwhile, Laredo, Lubbock, Tyler, and Wichita Falls have the lowest prices at $2.61 per gallon.
Nationally, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded is $3.14, which is two cents higher than last week but the same as last year.
Earlier this week, White House officials announced that they would delay the tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico for one month. This is important because about 70% of the crude oil the U.S. imports comes from these two countries, with most of it coming from Canada.
“Tariffs can have an impact on gas prices, but there are many other factors that affect them too,” said Daniel Armbruster, a spokesperson for AAA Texas.
“Things like global supply and demand, the season, refinery maintenance, natural disasters, and political events all play a role. It’s hard to predict when or how much gas prices will go up. The price of crude oil is the main thing that determines how high gas prices will go, and tariffs could affect that.”
The Energy Information Administration (EIA) recently reported that gasoline stocks went up by 2.2 million barrels, but distillate inventories dropped by 5.5 million barrels.
As spring is around the corner, gas prices might change as the switch to summer blend fuels happens in March and April.
