SpaceX to Create New City: Starbase, Texas

CAMERON COUNTY, TX — Elon Musk's dream of SpaceX founding a city in Texas may soon be realized. On Wednesday, February 12, Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño, Jr. signed an order finding satisfactory proof in support of the statutory requirements being met for the petition for incorporation of Starbase.

Here's the press release from Cameron County.

On Thursday, December 12, 2024, Cameron County received an Incorporation Petition for the city of Starbase, Texas, a Type-C municipality. After careful review of the petition by the Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño, Jr., Elections Administrator and Commissioners County Civil Legal Division, Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño, Jr. signed an order finding satisfactory proof in support of the statutory requirements being met for petition for incorporation of Starbase as a Type-C Municipality.

The incorporation petition submitted was duly signed by at least 10% of the qualified voters of Starbase, Texas. Additionally, the petition satisfied the statutorily required elements and set forth satisfactory proof that Starbase contains the requisite number of inhabitants as required by law and the area to be incorporated is not part of another incorporated city or town. Since the submitted petition met all statutory requirements, Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño, Jr. is required under Section 8.009 of the Texas Local Government Code to order that an incorporation election be held on a specific date and at a designate place in the community.

The election is set to occur during the general election on Saturday, May 3rd, 2025, from 7:00 am

to 7:00 pm at the "HUB" located at 39046 LBJ Blvd., Brownsville, Texas 78521. Early voting will occur at this same location April 22d through Friday, April 25th from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm, Saturday, April 26 from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and April 28t through April 29th from 9:00 pm to 7:00 pm.

"If the election passes, this will be the newest town in Cameron County since Los Indios in 1995.

We look forward to seeing the outcome of this election," stated Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño, Jr.

Located near the U.S.-Mexico border at the southernmost tip of Texas, the area has become a hub for SpaceX’s development and testing of Starship, the company’s next-generation spacecraft designed for deep-space missions. SpaceX first broke ground on the site in 2014.

Within the proposed city limits, the company owns nearly all of the land, with only 10 of approximately 250 lots not under its control. According to a local impact study released last year, more than 3,400 full-time SpaceX employees and contractors currently work at Starbase.
