West Texas Earthquake Recorded Near Ackerly

ACKERLY, TX – A minor earthquake struck West Texas on Friday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

UPDATE: The U.S. Geological Survey upgraded the initial 2.6-magnitude reading to a 4.7-magnitude earthquake.

The 2.6-magnitude quake was recorded at 1:36 p.m. CST about 12 miles southwest of Ackerly, a small town located between Lubbock and Midland. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 4.2 miles.

The Texas Seismological Network (TexNet) contributed data to the report.

While Texas is not known for frequent seismic activity, small quakes occasionally occur in the Permian Basin, often linked to oil and gas extraction.

The USGS encourages residents who may have felt the tremor to submit reports online here.
