AUSTIN, TX — A record number of Texans are expected to travel over the Memorial Day weekend, prompting ramped-up patrols from law enforcement agencies as part of the state’s annual “Click It or Ticket” campaign.
AAA projects that 3.7 million Texans will travel between Thursday and Monday, a 3% increase from last year and the third consecutive year of record-setting travel over the holiday weekend. Most travelers are expected to drive, increasing the need for road safety measures.
In response to the surge in traffic, the Texas Department of Transportation launched its “Click It or Ticket” campaign this week. The campaign runs through June 1 and is focused on enforcing seatbelt laws for all passengers, including proper use of child safety and booster seats.
Texas law requires every occupant in a vehicle to wear a seatbelt. Failure to do so can result in fines and court costs of up to $200. For children under age 8, the law mandates using a child safety seat or booster seat unless the child is taller than 4 feet, 9 inches. Violations can result in fines up to $250, plus court costs, says TxDOT.
Officers will be watching for drivers and passengers who are not properly buckled, with a particular focus on protecting young children.
TxDOT encourages all drivers to take extra care during the busy holiday period and to ensure that every passenger is properly secured before hitting the road.
